DIFFICULTY

Quiet, untrammeled, breathtaking—Southern Italy keeps pulling us back for more. We’ve been enjoying the cycling in Basilicata and Campania for some years now and this terrain, with its vast protected areas, simple and delicious cuisine, and crisp white wines, is just the place to spend a week winding done the end of summer.

WHERE WE STAY

We will pass the week between the mountain village of Rotonda and the coastal villages of Marina di Camerota and Paestum. These locations will be our launching pads for exploring the spectacular national parks— both mountainous terrain and hilly slopes overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.

The tour will end with transportation to Naples and we encourage you to stay on to enjoy the city and surrounding historical sights.

GEARED FOR

If you have yet to explore the southern region of Italy this is a wonderful place to start. Anyone with interests in history will be rewarded and the promise of great cycling will keep you motivated to stay fit through winter and spring.

The cycling difficulty is what we would rate a 3-pigger– undulating terrain with longer, sustained climbs and some technical descents. Cyclists should come prepared for some challenging days, including one 110k transfer ride that we’ll expect everyone to ride.

Please refer to our fitness check to make sure you are well prepared for this tour. If you have any concerns about your fitness level please contact us so we can help you choose the best tour.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Rotonda is a small, mountain village in southern Basilicata. Situated in the national park of Pollino and at the base of Monte Pollino this area offers plenty of nature to feast upon while we enjoy warming up on the surrounding terrain.

Cilento is a marvelously preserved area of the Campania region and a majority of its land is a national park, including one of Italy’s largest marine preserves. Because of the natural designation of the area limited development has impeded the terrain and on our rides we will enjoy the quiet of the surrounding nature.

We’ll look forward to a day excursion by boat, conditions permitting, to see some of the grotte and swim in pristine bays along the way.

Paestum, historically known as Magna Graecia, named by the Romans after the greek colonies that inhabited the area, has amazingly intact temples dating back to the 7th century b.c. that we will visit one day during the tour.

The tour will begin and end in Naples. Naples is a fascinating city, with nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum historical sights. We highly endorse spending a couple of extra days exploring the area and enjoying the incredible food and street life.
